Chapter 14
Momma Starts to Pray
Mike and Ruth Ann Moore had bought a new bed Saturday, November 5. They had been to town and splurged. That night they stayed up till nearly midnight visiting their neighbors.
But just before 1:30 a.m., somehow sensing that something was wrong, the Moores and Ruth's sister, Donna Porter, a guest in their home, all got up. Baby Jeremiah was in the trailer's addition. The new bed had been used only an hour and a half.
When the Moores looked out they saw about six inches of water on the ground. They got Jeremiah and headed together into Mike's study.
Suddenly the front of the trailer was torn away and what was left was spun around. They could see a massive wall of water coming. It was ten feet over the top of the large bus sitting a few yards away, and it slammed their mobile home into a clump of trees. Then something smashed them from behind.
Mike says, "We were thrown into the water. I was never on top. It seemed that I was under all the time. I came up
twice and I tried to swim. I was very scared and I don't think I was ready to die. I tried to stay alive because I didn't know if Ruth and Jeremiah had made it." The water carried Moore nearly a quarter of a mile, toward the bridge over Route 17.
Once out on the highway, Mike somehow knew that Ruth and Jeremiah had been lost. "Had I known they were both gone," he says, "I probably would have given up. They seemed to be first in my life, not the Lord.
"But there's been such a change since. Now I would be ready to die.
"God allowed the flood," says Mike. "The devil wanted it done, but now he wishes it had not happened. God has been getting praise and love and glory."
When Mike was thrown into the water, Ruth Ann, Jeremiah and Donna were somehow held back. Suddenly they too were swept away. They got to a log where Donna and Ruth sought to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to the baby. Donna started to take Jeremiah when Ruth said, "No, give him back to me, we're going home to be with Jesus."
Suddenly Ruth and Jeremiah were sucked under the water. Gone.
Mike continues, "Ruth had grown so much spiritually in the past year. She knew more. She was more ready. I don't think I could have reared Jeremiah. But now I know he's taken care of.
"It's hard. I want them back, but I have to go on.
"Ruth had prayed so hard that her family would find the Lord. After the tragedy, I went to visit them.
"I drove into the driveway and I just walked into their house. I found Momma sitting on a chair and I simply said, 'You know what you have to do.'
"'Show me how to pray,' she answered. Ruth's mother came to the Lord that day, and Momma's life has been different ever since. There have been others who have turned to the Lord too.
